Kootenai County Jail Expansion

Kootenai County was faced with overcrowding and with housing up to 50 inmates out of County on any given day so the Commissioners committed to set aside $14-$15 million toward an expansion. The current jail opened in 1987 with 98 beds and expanded in 2002 with an addition and remodel (also designed by LCA Architects) that brought the jail capacity to 327 beds.

With limited space to expand the County sought solutions from LCA Architects who’s approach was to maximize the number of beds in the designated area of expansion and with a goal of implementing efficiencies across all aspects of the project, specifically staffing and operations. We were able to conceptualize a 30,000 square foot, 236-bed addition all centered around one control room.

The 30,000 square foot addition to the existing Kootenai County Jail consists of 20,000 square feet of finished detention space, 2,000 square feet of secure outdoor recreation space and 8,000 square feet of shelled future housing space. Key components include 84 beds of two-tiered close-custody housing, a 10-bed inmate worker dormitory, a 28-bed two-tiered medical unit and clinic, a replacement laundry, associated program, indoor and outdoor recreation spaces and a few minor remodels to the existing jail.
